LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA - It's spring. A late afternoon shower has Just ended. Now the evening, sky has announcing the end of another hard day's work at the old grist mill.
Inside, George Eckert lights another lamp as he shouts advice to his son over the roar of the grinding stones. At the door, a local merchant gestures, by hand, to the miller that he is leaving another barrel of grain as payment.
Soon, the strain of power that had been felt in every timber will come to rest and the squeal of the heavy wooden gears and massive wheel will also give into the night. The Osceola Mill will close for business.
Water powered mills such as this were an important part of colonial life. They were found throughout the countryside on just about every stream with sufficient power.
I encountered this beautifully restored grist mill and forge in the heart of the rich farmland of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and I painted it exactly as I found it. The mill is quiet now and, except for the sounds of an occasional passing buggy, it stands as a wonderful silent monument to days gone by, and a reminder of our rich heritage and life in rural America. -Richard Bollinger
