A preliminary part of the pagent that was the Sun Dance involved the ritual of the weather dancer. Brandishing an eagle feather fan and blowing a plumed whistle made of eagle bone, he danced first in the direction of sunrise and then toward where the sun went down. He shouted from time to time as he danced, warning the clouds away.
