Howard Terpning

Howard Terpning is a modern-day storyteller, rekindling the image of the Plains Indians by painting them with power and emotion, painting them as they were. "We could have learned so much from the American Indians if we had had the interest to listen to them and pay attention to them," Terpning says.

Declared the late Fred A. Myers, director of Tulsa's Gilcrease Museum: "HowardTerpning is simply the best and best-known artist doing Western subjects at this point. . . . He is among a very small group of painters of the West in the late twentieth century whose art will still be hanging in museums and appreciated a hundred years from now." One of the finest artists of Plains Indian history is Howard Terpning, whose control of color and ability to evoke emotion are so strong that he has become known as the Storyteller of the Native American People.
